Crawlwise vs BuiltWith

BuiltWith is the category leader for who uses what technology across a huge historical index. Crawlwise Data is not trying to replace that encyclopedia. We sell a different job: tell your software when a site’s sitemap, feed, or tech stack changes — via signed webhooks and prepaid API credits.

Short answer

Choose BuiltWith if…

You need market-wide tech adoption lists, historical lead lists, sales intelligence (“find all Shopify stores in X”), or a deep research database.

Choose Crawlwise if…

You already know which URLs matter and need continuous change alerts (or simple on-demand lookups) into your app — webhooks, OpenAPI, MCP, pay-for-changes credits.

We do not claim to beat BuiltWith’s database. Their historical coverage and lead-gen workflows are a different product. Crawlwise’s wedge is monitoring + signed events for builders.

What Crawlwise is (and isn’t)

Is

  • Infrastructure so software knows when public sites move: new pages, new posts, tech signals
  • API-first: free demo, trial keys, docs, OpenAPI, local MCP
  • Pay for changes, not empty checks (cheap noops on scheduled monitors)

Isn’t

  • A replacement for BuiltWith’s multi-year technology census
  • A lead list of “all companies using X”
  • A browser automation or anti-bot bypass platform

If a prospect asks “who uses React in Germany?”, that’s BuiltWith territory. If they ask “ping my webhook when competitor.com ships a new blog post or drops Cloudflare,” that’s Crawlwise.

1,000 free credits, one time (about 33 tech-stack lookups or 100 feed reads). No card. One key per email every 30 days; per network up to 5 requests an hour and 10 a day. The trial flow never emails you.

Trial limits: 20 requests/min, 5 monitors. If a call costs more than your balance, it's refused and you're charged nothing. Disposable email addresses are refused. We keep only a salted hash of your email (Privacy). Agents: POST /v1/trial with {"email": "…", "acceptTerms": true} (or accept later with POST /v1/terms/accept).

FAQ

Can Crawlwise replace BuiltWith for lead gen?

No. We don’t sell market-wide technology lists. Use BuiltWith (or similar) for that. Use Crawlwise to watch the URL list you already care about.

Is your tech detection as deep as BuiltWith?

We provide practical on-demand detection for a URL (CMS, frameworks, CDN, analytics, DNS/email signals, etc.). BuiltWith’s historical depth and coverage are a different scale. We don’t claim otherwise.

What makes Crawlwise worth paying for then?

Scheduling, state, change detection, cheap noops, retries, signed webhook delivery, robots handling, and API/MCP access — so your product doesn’t reinvent website watch infrastructure.

Do you respect robots.txt?

We follow robots.txt for CrawlwiseBot; disallowed targets are refused and not charged. Site owners: CrawlwiseBot.
